Ait Bougmez Traverse

Ait Bougmez Valley is among the most mystifying places in the mountain ranges of Atlas, leave the other places of Morocco for long vacations. You will find green pastures patchwork, fertile lands, and streams of windy mountains surrounded by peaks that higher than usual (including Mgoun, a second highest mountain of Morocco). As it is separate from the other parts, the area is covered with traditional and mesmerizing Berber villages in the mountains of Atlas.
This walking area follows the route of the Bougmez Valley upstream beginning at Agoud at the top of the Valley. As the trail takes up and off of the valley towards the go of Tizi n'Rougoult, the vegetation limits to the plants of alpine and bushes and the horizon widen to the summit of M'goun, over the Tessaoult river, the Southern M'goun Massif. On the Southern side of the Atlas Mountains, the route takes a new crossing while passing the Tessaoult River through villages of Berber of Magdaz and Fakhour.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Marrakech - Agouti

  • Morning: Depart from Marrakech at 9 am, embarking on a scenic 6-hour drive to the serene Bougmez Valley.
  • En route: Enjoy a stop at the breathtaking Cascade Ouzoud waterfalls, boasting a dramatic 100m drop.
  • Evening: Arrive in Agouti, a quaint village nestled in the valley, offering picturesque views. Settle in for a relaxing night at a local guesthouse.
  • Meals: Dinner
  • Accommodation: Comfortable village gite
  • Transport: Private, comfortable transfer from Marrakech to Agouti

DAY 2: Agouti - Rougoult

  • Scenic Walk: Start from Agouti, heading towards Agerssif, with captivating views of the 'Happy Valley.'
  • Lunch Break: Enjoy a riverside lunch at the confluence of the Lakhdar and Bou Goumez Rivers.
  • Afternoon Hike: Traverse through the narrowing Lakhdar Valley, passing the picturesque village of Taghoulit and reaching Sebt Ait Bou Wlli.
  • Campsite: Set up camp near Rougoult on the banks of the Tifra River.
  • Duration: Approximately 6-7 hours (330m ascent)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Camping in the wilderness

DAY 3: Rougoult - Amezri

  • Morning Trail: Follow the Tifra River for two hours, passing terraced banks and increasingly barren landscapes.
  • High Point: Cross the Tizi n'Rougoult pass (2860m), offering panoramic views of M'Goun and the southern M'Goun Massif.
  • Descent to Amezri: Wind down to the village of Amezri for an overnight stay.
  • Duration: Approximately 6-7 hours (970m ascent, 600m descent)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Camping amidst nature

DAY 4: Amezri - Ait Ali N'Ito

  • Riverside Walk: Descend gently along the Tessaoult River, flanked by impressive cliffs and traditional villages.
  • Cultural Exploration: Visit the historic village of Ait Hamza and optionally detour to Magdaz, known for its unique tower-houses.
  • Evening: Arrive at the village of Ait Ali n'Ito, nestled in the heart of the Atlas Mountains.
  • Duration: Approximately 6 hours (430m ascent, 150m descent)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Camp under the stars

DAY 5: Ait Ali N'Ito - Marrakech

  • Final Trek: Enjoy a leisurely walk alongside the river, passing through the picturesque village of Fakhour and reaching Ifoulou.
  • Cultural Insight: Visit Fakhour's traditional agadir and explore Ifoulou's vibrant souk (market).
  • Return Journey: Conclude the trek at Ait Alla, where transport awaits for the return drive to Marrakech.
  • Duration: Approximately 3 hours (150m descent)
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Transport: Return to Marrakech in comfort (6 hours)
