5 Days/ 4 Nights
Few journeys pack as much drama,
culture, and sheer visual wonder into five days as this carefully crafted
circuit through Morocco’s most extraordinary landscapes. It begins at altitude,
with a proper mountain trek through the Azzaden valley — a world of juniper
forests, cascading water, and mud-brick Berber villages where life has changed
little in centuries. Your guide, a long-term Atlas resident, knows every hidden
shortcut and every family willing to share a pot of mint tea.
From
Imlil, the road unfurls eastward over the Tizi-n-Tichka, one of North Africa’s
great mountain passes, before descending into the pre-Saharan south. Here the
architecture shifts from Alpine village to labyrinthine kasbah, the colours
from green to ochre, and the air from cool to warm and spice-scented. The Dades
and Todra gorges are among the most dramatic canyon landscapes on the continent
— and with a knowledgeable guide to lead you off the main road, you’ll discover
viewpoints and palmery walks that the coach-tour crowds never reach.
The grand finale is Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi — Morocco’s most iconic sea of sand. A camel trek at sunset to your private desert camp, an evening of traditional Gnawa music under a sky blazing with stars, and an early-morning ride back as the dunes ignite in the sunrise: this is the stuff that travel memoirs are made of. Throughout the journey, High Atlas Hiking’s philosophy holds constant: small groups, authentic lodgings, real cultural connection, and the kind of insider knowledge that only comes from decades of living and working in these mountains and deserts.
Starting time 9
Moderate
After breakfast in Marrakech, your driver collects you for the scenic transfer through Tahnaout, Oued Ghighaya, and Asni — enjoy the patchwork of Berber villages strung along the valley. On arrival in Imlil (65km from Marrakech), meet your guide and muleteer, then set off on foot. The day’s headline is the climb to Tizi Mzik pass (2,684m), rewarded with panoramic views over the Imlil valley and the summit of Toubkal. From here you descend past the Tamsoulte waterfalls — at 100 metres, the highest in the Atlas — before threading down through aromatic juniper forest to the traditional village of Tizi Oussem. Overnight at the village guesthouse.
⏱ Walking: approx. 5 hours |
Altitude gain: 934m
Breakfast in the morning sunshine before heading down the
colourful valley, passing the neat stone houses of Id Issa village. The trail
climbs again to the Tizi Oudid pass (2,000m), then winds through a wild
thurifer juniper forest and on to Mattat village. Lunch is taken in the shade
of ancient walnut trees beside a rushing river — one of those simple Moroccan
moments you’ll carry home with you. A gentle afternoon trek brings you back
down to Imlil. Overnight in Imlil.
⏱ Walking: approx. 5 hours | Moderate terrain
Picked up from your accommodation at 9:00am, you begin the long
and spectacular drive east over the Atlas via the Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass —
one of the great road journeys of Morocco. The landscape unfolds from
snow-touched peaks to terracotta kasbahs and shimmering palm oases. En route
you have the option to visit the famous Ouarzazate Film Studios — the
‘Hollywood of Africa’ — or to stretch your legs on a riverside hike. Arriving
at the Dades Gorge in the afternoon, there’s time for a walk into the gorge
itself or simply to settle in and absorb the extraordinary landscape from your
hotel terrace. Overnight in Dades.
⏱ Drive: approx. 7 hours (with stops) | Optional hike available
After breakfast, head east to Todra Gorge, where sheer rock
walls rise 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon threaded by a cool
river. Explore the palmery — a lush oasis of towering date palms and verdant
gardens that seems impossibly alive in this desert landscape. After lunch,
continue deeper into the pre-Sahara to Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi
dunes. As the afternoon light turns golden, mount your camel for a 90-minute
trek into the dunes to your private Berber camp. Dinner is a traditional Moroccan
spread eaten around the fire; the evening ends under a sky so dense with stars
it almost seems unreal. Overnight in the desert camp.
⏱ Drive: approx. 6 hours | Camel trek: 1.5 hours at sunset
Rise before dawn for a magical hour-long camel ride as the
Sahara awakens in shades of gold and rose. Back in Merzouga, there’s time for a
welcome shower and a leisurely breakfast before the long drive back across the
Atlas to Marrakech. Your driver makes plenty of stops for photographs,
exploration, and a proper sit-down lunch along the way. Expect to arrive back
in Marrakech between 17:00 and 18:00.
⏱ Drive: approx. 10 hours (with stops) | Camel ride: 1 hour at sunrise
Year-round (best Oct–May)
Village guesthouse, traditional gite, riad-style hotel, desert camp
Days 1 and 2 involve full days of mountain trekking with
significant altitude gain — you should be comfortable walking 5–6 hours on
uneven terrain. Days 3–5 are primarily driving with shorter, optional walks. A
reasonable level of general fitness is recommended, but no specialist
mountaineering experience is required.
The tour runs year-round. October to May is generally the most
comfortable window: spring brings wildflowers to the mountains and mild desert
temperatures, while autumn offers golden light and warm days. Summer in the
Sahara can be extremely hot (40°C+), though the mountain section remains
relatively cool.
Included: all transport from/to Marrakech, experienced
English-speaking guide, muleteer for the hiking days, 4 nights’ accommodation
(twin/double), all breakfasts, one picnic lunch in the mountains, camel trek
and one night at a traditional desert camp with dinner. Not included: flights,
travel insurance, meals not specified, personal expenses, and tips.
The camel trek is a 90-minute ride at a steady walking pace and
is suitable for most people. If you prefer not to ride, your driver can take
you directly to the camp by 4x4. Please let us know in advance if you have any
concerns.
Layers are essential: mountain temperatures can drop sharply at
night even in summer, while the desert is hot by day and cold after dark.
Sturdy walking boots are a must for Days 1 and 2. We’ll send you a full
suggested packing list on booking.
