Trek Difficulty Grading System

Find the right High Atlas trek for your fitness level

How We Grade Our Treks

Choosing the right trek starts with an honest assessment of your fitness and experience. Our grading system is designed to help you select a High Atlas Mountain trek or Morocco hiking tour that matches your ability — so you can enjoy every step of the journey with confidence. All grades assume a reasonable level of general health. If you are unsure which grade suits you, our team is always happy to advise.

🌱 Gentle Treks

Ideal for: First-time trekkers, families, and those looking for a relaxed introduction to hiking in Morocco.

Our gentle treks in the High Atlas Mountains are designed for anyone who enjoys a comfortable walk in stunning scenery without the need for prior hiking experience. These Morocco day hikes follow well-maintained trails through Berber villages, river valleys, and terraced hillsides at lower altitudes. Your licensed local guide will walk at your pace and share the stories, culture, and natural highlights along the way.

  • Typically 2 – 5 hours of walking per day
  • Well-marked trails with minimal elevation gain
  • Suitable for most fitness levels and ages
  • Perfect for families with children

🌲 Moderate Treks

Ideal for: Regular walkers who enjoy a good day out on the trails and are comfortable with some uphill terrain.

Our moderate High Atlas trekking routes offer a satisfying challenge without requiring specialist experience. You will encounter some steeper sections and uneven terrain, but our experienced mountain guides will support you every step of the way. These treks take you deeper into the Atlas Mountains, crossing higher passes and visiting more remote Berber communities that few tourists ever reach.

  • Typically 4 – 6 hours of walking per day
  • Some ascents and descents on mountain trails
  • A reasonable level of fitness recommended
  • Regular walking experience helpful but not essential

⛰️ Challenging Treks

Ideal for: Experienced hikers who are used to multi-day trekking and are comfortable at altitude.

Our challenging treks take you into the heart of the High Atlas Mountains — reaching altitudes above 3,000 metres, crossing demanding mountain passes, and spending nights in remote mountain refuges or traditional guesthouses. These Morocco mountain treks require good physical fitness, solid stamina, and prior experience of walking on rugged terrain. The rewards are extraordinary: dramatic high-altitude landscapes, unspoilt valleys, and a genuine sense of achievement.

  • Typically 4 – 9 hours of walking per day, with occasional longer days (10 – 12h)
  • Altitudes above 3,000m — acclimatisation important
  • Good fitness and multi-day hiking experience required
  • Includes treks such as the Toubkal Circuit and Atlas Valleys Trek

⛳ Demanding Treks

Ideal for: Seasoned trekkers and mountaineers seeking a serious high-altitude challenge in Morocco.

Our demanding treks represent the highest level of physical and mental challenge we offer — including the iconic Mount Toubkal summit climb, at 4,167m the highest peak in North Africa. These expeditions require you to be in excellent physical condition with well-developed stamina and prior experience on high-altitude or technical mountain terrain. Conditions can be harsh and unpredictable, particularly in winter, and the days are long and physically demanding.

  • Typically 6 – 9 hours of walking per day, with occasional longer days (10 – 12h)
  • High altitudes above 3,500m — strong fitness essential
  • Prior experience on demanding mountain terrain required
  • Includes the Mount Toubkal Climb and Toubkal Winter Ascent
