Your driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel at 9am and within the hour the city gives way to the broad Haouz Plain, the distant wall of the Atlas growing steadily larger through the windscreen. Your first stop is the Asni valley, where your camel is waiting patiently beside the riverbed. A 30-minute ride carries you through a quietly spectacular landscape: shallow river crossings, rows of apple and walnut trees, and the crumbling silhouette of an old kasbah rising against the hillside. From Asni, the road climbs alongside the Oued Ghighaya river, the valley walls tightening as terraced fields step up the slopes on either side and traditional Berber villages cling to the ridgelines above.
