The road west from Marrakech to Essaouira is one of Morocco's finest drives — argan trees dotting the plains, the occasional camel grazing at the roadside and, if you're fortunate, a small herd of goats defying gravity from the branches above. A stop at a women's cooperative introduces the ancient art of argan oil production: the cracking of shells, the cold-pressing of kernels and the extraordinary range of culinary and cosmetic products that result. It's a genuinely fascinating stop for adults and children alike, and the cooperatives provide vital income for local women.

Essaouira itself is a revelation. Unlike the frenetic energy of Marrakech, this UNESCO-listed port city operates at a different tempo entirely — sea breezes keep the temperature pleasantly cool, the medina is compact and easy to navigate with children, and the long Atlantic beach beyond the ramparts is perfect for an afternoon of nothing more demanding than building sandcastles. A two-hour guided tour of the old city covers the blue-painted fishing port, the 18th-century Portuguese ramparts, the marquetry workshops where craftsmen transform thuya wood into remarkable objects, and the lively fish souks where the morning's catch is sold directly from the boats.

Day two brings the option of a surf lesson or horse ride at Sidi Kaouki — a wild, windswept bay 25 kilometres south of town with some of the finest beginner waves on the Moroccan coast. The drive back towards Marrakech on Day 3 takes a scenic detour via the Takerkoust lake and the elevated Kik plateau — a lonely, beautiful landscape of rocky hillsides and panoramic Atlas views that most visitors to Morocco never see — before dropping down into the Asni valley and climbing to Imlil. The final morning brings the tour's most active moment: a gentle family-friendly trek through the Berber villages and waterfalls above the valley, with the snow-capped peaks of the Toubkal massif as your constant companion. A camel ride in Asni on the way home provides the perfect final flourish before the road sweeps you back to Marrakech.
