ISK Summit Day Hike from Imlil

The ISK summit day hike is the quiet way up from Imlil: a 6- to 7-hour, 13 km loop with 1,300 metres of ascent through pine and juniper woodland to a peaceful summit at 2,520 m, facing Mount Toubkal and its neighbouring peaks. The descent drops back through the forest to Armed, the largest and one of the oldest Berber villages around Imlil, where lunch is served in a family home, then follows Achain village and a waterfall back to Imlil.

From Imlil (1,700 m) the trail winds up through pine and juniper woodland along quieter paths than the main Toubkal route, and for most of the morning you have the mountainside to yourselves. As you climb, the trees thin and the views open across the Mizane Valley. Height comes steadily, past grazing pastures and the stone shelters used by shepherds in summer, until the ridge levels out at the ISK summit, a peaceful spot perched at 2,520 m with a panorama of Mount Toubkal and the peaks around it.

After a break at the top, the descent returns into the forest and continues to Armed, built on a rocky outcrop with its traditional stone houses stacked into the hillside. Lunch is served here in a Berber home. The final leg passes through Achain village and beside a refreshing waterfall before the path returns to Imlil in the late afternoon, completing a truly memorable Atlas Mountain day.

Who is this hike for?

Graded moderate to challenging: 13 km with 1,300 metres of climbing and the same descent over six to seven hours. It suits regular walkers with reasonable fitness; no technical skills are needed, though walking poles help on the way down. Departures are private to your group, daily from Imlil, with pick-up from Marrakech available at extra cost.
