This extraordinary journey begins in the vibrant city of Marrakech before winding through the dramatic Tizi n'Test pass into the heart of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. Here, in the shadow of ancient volcanic formations, you'll discover a world where traditional life continues much as it has for centuries. Each day brings new wonders: traverse hidden valleys where crystal-clear streams nurture emerald-green saffron fields, pass through villages where women still weave prized Berber carpets using age-old techniques, and climb through volcanic landscapes to some of Morocco's most spectacular viewpoints.

The trek follows ancient shepherds' paths, crossing high passes and fertile valleys while staying in comfortable wild camps each night. You'll witness daily life in the mountains, from farmers tending their precious saffron crops to shepherds leading their flocks through the rugged terrain. The highlight comes with the ascent of Jebel Siroua itself, offering unparalleled views across the Anti-Atlas and towards the Sahara Desert beyond.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Tislit Valley

Begin your journey from the bustling medina of Marrakech, crossing the dramatic Tizi n'Test pass (2,130m) into the Anti-Atlas region. Drive through Morocco's precious argan groves before reaching our trailhead. A gentle two-hour afternoon walk through traditional farmland and spectacular gorges leads to our first camp in the peaceful Tislit Valley (1,544m). Walking: 2 hours | Ascent: 200m | Drive: 6 hours

Day 2: Aït Oubyal Valley Trek

Immerse yourself in traditional Berber life as we trek through the verdant Aït Oubyal Valley. Visit the villages of Aït Esine, Aït Marouf, and Aït Amrane, where locals tend to precious saffron fields and ancient grain terraces. Pass impressive basalt formations before reaching Tizgui's historic granaries. Camp at Aghbalou Tizgui (2,400m). Walking: 6-7 hours | Ascent: 900m

Day 3: Guiliz Ridge to Tagrara

Trek along sparkling mountain streams before ascending to the Guiliz Ridge (2,900m), offering spectacular views over the Siroua massif. Descend through remote pastures to traditional shepherds' shelters and beautifully terraced gardens. Overnight near the historic Tagrara caves (2,600m), traditional shelter for the Beni M'Zguid tribe's shepherds. Walking: 5 hours | Ascent: 500m | Descent: 300m

Day 4: Siroua Summit Trek

Today brings our most challenging and rewarding ascent. Trek through volcanic landscapes and dramatic rock formations to reach Siroua's summit ridge (3,304m). Enjoy panoramic views stretching from the High Atlas to the Sahara before descending to the beautiful Tissouitine shepherds' settlement (2,450m). Walking: 6-7 hours | Ascent: 700m | Descent: 800m

Day 5: Saffron Valley to Tinzarine

Descend through stunning valleys dotted with traditional stone shepherds' houses and innovative irrigation systems. Cross the Anzounmer Pass (2,732m) for magnificent Atlas views before following ancient paths through saffron fields and walnut groves. Visit the villages of Aït Ighmour and Idoughagh before camping near scenic Tinzarine. Walking: 5-6 hours | Ascent: 280m | Descent: 900m

Day 6: Return to Marrakech

A final morning's walk through mountain villages before driving back to Marrakech via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m). Arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon. Walking: 2 hours | Descent: 200m | Drive: 4 hours

This trek is rated moderate to challenging. While you don't need to be an expert mountaineer, you should be comfortable walking 5-7 hours daily on mountainous terrain. The highest point reached is 3,304m, and some days involve considerable ascent and descent. Good fitness and previous hill walking experience are recommended.

The trek is planned with proper acclimatisation in mind. We ascend gradually, and most people experience no significant issues at these altitudes. Our guides are trained to monitor and manage altitude-related concerns.

All meals during the trek are freshly prepared by our mountain chef. Expect nutritious Moroccan and international cuisine, including tagines, couscous, salads, and plenty of fresh vegetables. We can cater to vegetarian and most dietary requirements with advance notice.

Temperatures vary significantly. Daytime temperatures range from 15-25°C, but nights can drop to 0-5°C, occasionally lower in spring and autumn. We provide detailed packing lists to ensure you're properly equipped.

Yes, we provide purified drinking water throughout the trek. You'll need to bring a reusable water bottle (2-3 litres capacity).

Our routes allow for evacuation if necessary, though this might take several hours in remote areas. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for this reason.

Your main luggage is carried by mules between camps. You only carry a daypack with essentials like water, camera, and extra layers. A 25-35L daypack is ideal.

The Siroua region is very safe and peaceful. Our guides are locals with extensive knowledge of the area, and we maintain constant communication with our Marrakech office.

March to May offers spring flowers and mild temperatures, while September to November provides stable weather and clear skies. We avoid the hot summer months (July-August) and cold winter period (December-February).
